Kamala Harris
Kamala Devi Harris, born on the 20th of October 1964, is a prominent American politician and lawyer. She is currently the 49th vice president of the United States. She is both the first female vice-president as well as the highest ranking female official in the United States. As a member of the Democratic Party, she previously served as attorney general for California between 2011 and 2017 and also as an United States senator representing California from 2017 until 2021. Harris was born in Oakland. Harris received her law degree from Howard University. Harris started her career in the Alameda County District Attorney's Office. Then, she was recruited to the San Francisco District Attorney's Office. In 2003 she was elected district attorney of San Francisco. In 2010, she was elected Attorney General of California and then re-elected in 2014. Harris served as the junior United States senator from California between 2017 and 2021. Harris defeated Loretta Sanchez to become the 2nd African American woman senator and the first South Asian American ever to be elected to the United States Senate. As senator, she fought for healthcare reform and federal de-scheduling of cannabis, a path towards citizenship for immigrants without a legal status as well as the DREAM Act, a ban on assault weapons, and progressive tax reform. The attention of the nation was drawn by her outspoken examination of Trump administration officials during Senate sessions. The most notable was Trump's second Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh who was accused of sexual misconduct.
